How To Deal With A Bully At Work

Dear Bullying Target

If you have been looking for a way to stop the endless nightmare of being bullied at work, regain hope and get back to being able to sleep then this could be the most important page that you read all year!confusion

You see, I too used to feel unsafe at work, agonize over what people were saying about me and reel in shock at the injustice of what was happening.  I have even had my boss tell me to stop being difficult and “just get over it”.

But, not any more!

My name is Cas Smith and I am a former workplace bullying target who helps people deal with distressing bullying situations in their workplace.  I, like you, looked for natural justice and expected that my boss, HR or even my peers would deal with the bully.  Unfortunately, even with great performance reviews, I was the one told to stop making trouble or … maybe … lose my job!

But Being Told I Was A Trouble-Maker
Wasn’t Going To Stop ME!

I started reading up on the organisation’s policies and finding out my legal rights.  I put into practice everything I had ever learnt on conflict management, negotiation and dealing with difficult people, read every self-help book I could spend my hard earned money on, and listened to every workplace bullying “expert” who offered advice … but NOTHING WORKED!

Then, I discovered the COLD HARD TRUTH about why I simply couldn’t make the bullying stop.  And here it is …

Believe or not, you might feel you are the bully’s target but in reality you’re not!  We will help you discover the real reason for you being bullied at work and it might not be what you think.

WARNING!  Avoid Any Advice That Offers The Following As Solutions

In fact, here’s my 6 top most “ineffective” methods of dealing with the situation.

iStock_000011234098Small_stopIneffective Solution #1Ignore The Bully And They Will Stop (NOT!)
If a bully is getting what they want (whatever that is…) their staying power will be longer than yours!!

Exhausted businesswomanIneffective Solution #2Just Get On With It!
In reality, working harder and longer might mean you get your work done but it CERTAINLY WONT stop the bully!
It WILL put you under extreme pressure to (over) perform!!

Stop sign, vectorIneffective Solution #3Tell The Bully To Stop
Really?  And they will listen, why?
A bully is … a bully. A request to stop can make you appear weak or vulnerable, more of a target to them. Ask at the wrong time – when the bully is agitated or with cronies – and your request may even be a red flag to a bull!

iStock_000003254495Small_hear no evilIneffective Solution #4Tell Your Boss
So, you think they know what to do, or even want to know it’s happening?  The downside of telling is that your boss may think it easier to manage you and label you the trouble maker than to step into the firing line themselves to confront the bully.  Experts in their field they well may be; however, few bosses know now to manage difficult, complex, sensitive situations … like bullying.

iStock_000014435805Small_glass roomIneffective Solution #5Go to HR
Seems their agenda might not include looking after you, despite what their policy says! HR needs to put the organisation first leaving your interests to come a sad second.  That could mean dragging out ineffective company policies — or removing you — and not taking any real action against the bully.

iStock_000014393585Small_picnicIneffective Solution #6Tell your family and friends
Spreading the pain … all the time? Most of us have precious little time to spend with our family and friends.  Spending most, or all, of it obsessing about bad situations work seems a waste.  Worse, even though they have your best interests at heart, their ‘solutions’ are likely to be the ineffective ones I’ve already talked about!

How do I know doing these ‘solutions’ are not a good idea? I’ve tried them.

In fact…

This Horrible Bullying Advice Nearly Cost Me My Job!

Back then (twelve years ago), I was doing well in a key planning role for a large, high profile project with lots of senior stakeholders.  Seemingly overnight, my nightmare began and my situation went from great to awful!  Suddenly, my name was mysteriously ‘missed’ off the invite list for all the important meetings and people didn’t meet my eye or say hello any more.  A friend told me that they had heard rumours from “reliable sources” I was not performing well and that I might be “moved on”.

4342126_thumbnailI scraped my memory – What have I done wrong?  Why treat me like this!

I worked even harder and put in even longer hours only to find things getting even worse.  It got the point where I could not remember when I’d last slept more than a few hours in row.  I even started thinking about leaving my job before they fired me – things were not good.

Then, I cottoned on to the ‘who’ and ‘why’ of my troubles.  You see, the ‘go live’ date was looming and all the senior stakeholders were jostling for control of the project.  And, my big ‘aha’ moment, you ask?  My boss thought I was the obstacle stopping him from owning the project!  He went from championing me to lampooning me.  I was his target!!  While the road was still long and hard, working out how I got to be in the firing line meant I could choose how to deal with the bully and the ‘copy cats’ at work and negotiate the minefields.

Blood pressure measuring studio shotI have actively followed 25 years of research in the European Union, America and Australia on the extreme effects of bullying on workers’ health and careers, and kept up to date on trends in dealing with bullying in the workplace.  After 12 years working with people from all levels of organisations, from new starters to people with many years of service, my experience as a coach for workplace bullying targets is extensive and successful.  I’ve provided information, affirmation, decision-making tools and coaching that has transformed people’s work situation.

Here’s what my clients say about me:

Mary was a Senior Manager in a State Government agency with a broad range of responsibilities including project and human resource management.  Mary was bullied over an extended period by her line manager.

Mary’s Aha Moment! She DID NOT Cause The Bullying!iStock_000017900081Small_business woman“On reflection, meeting and discussing the issue with Cas on a regular basis allowed me to explore the problem in a detached manner, determine my part in the situation and clarify the next steps towards resolution.  I realised that although I wasn’t the cause of the problem my inaction was a contributing factor to its continuing and, with Cas’ help, my decision was to remove myself from the situation and seek an alternate role.  What I learnt from Cas’ mentoring then continues to assist in my work relationships today.”
Gordon won a promotional position after telling his bosses about the severe bullying he suffered.  Now he has a senior management role in a health organisation.

Gordon Finally Loves His Job Again After 5 Painful Years Of BullyingiStock_000010479842Small_Gordon“I found it very traumatic to be bullied at work.  At the end of each work day I was exhausted but not because of the work!  I was exhausted by trying to understand the way I was feeling and how best to improve my work situation.I knew all the workplace policies around the prevention of bullying and other forms of harassment in the workplace but they didn’t help!  The policies missed out what I needed:  What do you do about workplace bullying and how do you look after yourself?  Trying to solve the problems on my own was not working – I was causing my family and friends a lot of anxiety and I felt traumatized every day.  Coaching support from Cas really helped me work through the nightmare.Cas pre-warned me that choosing to raise the issue at work would likely mean the problem would escalate further, and that I would probably feel what little control I had slip away before things got any better.  That’s exactly what happened to me.  My managers made decisions without involving me in discussion – I was ‘asked’ to move office and told not to mention the word ‘bully’ in my discussions with anyone.  What the ?!Cas’ coaching really helped me understand what was going on and that I should look after myself.  I felt supported by someone who actually knew what I was feeling and Cas helped me anticipate, prepare and choose how to react when illogical, hurtful things happened. With Cas’ support, I found a way to engage at work in a meaningful way while working on my new career direction.  I am now in a much better job and life is good again.I absolutely recommend Cas’ coaching to anyone striving to work through a horrible workplace issue.  Getting her professional help was the best thing I could have done.”
